For Immediate Release

Ellsworth County Health Department is following the subset of initial target groups to receive priority for H1N1 vaccination recommendations made by the Kansas Department of Health & Environment (KDHE) until vaccine availability increases:

a.       A. Pregnant Women

b.       BPersons who live with or provide care for infants less than 6 months of age (parents, siblings and daycare providers, etc.)

c.       C.  Healthcare and emergency medical services personnel who have direct contact with patients or infectious material

d.      D.   Children 6 months through 4 years of age

e.      .E.   Children and adolescents 5 -18 years of age who have medical conditions that put them at higher risk for influenza-related complications

Chronic medical conditions that confer a higher risk for influenza-related complications

include chronic pulmonary (including asthma), cardiovascular (except hypertension), renal,

hepatic, cognitive, neurologic/neuromuscular, hematologic, or metabolic disorders (including

diabetes mellitus) or immunosuppression (including immunosuppression caused by medications

or by human immunodeficiency virus).

Healthcare personnel (HCP) include all paid and unpaid persons working in healthcare settings

who have the potential for exposure to patients with influenza, infectious materials, including

body substances, contaminated medical supplies and equipment, or contaminated environmental

surfaces. HCP might include (but are not limited to) physicians, nurses, nursing assistants,

therapists, technicians, emergency medical service personnel, dental personnel, pharmacists,

laboratory personnel, autopsy personnel, students and trainees, contractual staff not employed by

the healthcare facility, and persons (e.g., clerical, dietary, housekeeping, maintenance, and

volunteers) not directly involved in patient care but potentially exposed to infectious agents that

can be transmitted to and from HCP. The ACIP recommendations apply to HCP in acute-care

hospitals, nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities, physicians’ offices, urgent care and

emergency medical services. Emergency medical services personnel might include persons in an

occupation (e.g., emergency medical technicians and fire fighters) who provide emergency

medical care as part of their normal job duties.

Top 3 reasons to get your flu vaccine

1. Prevents influenza-related death.

Each year over 36,000 people in the U.S. die because of the flu—most are 65 or older. More people die from flu than from any other vaccine-preventable disease.

2. Prevents severe illness.

In the U.S. influenza puts about 200,000 people in the hospital each year. Children younger than 2 years old are as likely to be hospitalized as adults who are 65 or older.

3. Protects other people.

You should get vaccinated if you live with or care for others who are at high risk of complications from the flu. Getting a flu vaccination yourself can help protect your family members, including seniors and young children.
